Acne Concerns? Let's Talk IPL!

WHAT IS IPL TREATMENT

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy frequently is used to improve the color and texture of your skin by targeting red and brown spots caused by sun damage, also known as photoaging. IPL uses specific multiple wavelengths of pulsating light and at a lower intensity. This allows it to treat a range of skin conditions at a time and is gentler on the skin. The wavelengths used give all the benefits of light without the harmful and damaging wavelengths found in other light sources.

WHAT DOES IT DO FOR ACNE

The Intense Pulsed Light used for acne therapy treats both the bacteria and the sebaceous glands which are main causes of acne. IPL kills acne bacteria living in the glands and on the surface of the skin. It also causes the sebaceous glands to produce less oil. There is immediate reduction of acne lesions and prevention of future breakouts.

WHO CAN GET THIS TREATMENT

IPL therapy is available for all ages and offers not only a greater than 40% reduction of active and inflamed lesions, but also improves the discolorations left behind by previous acne flare ups. It can be used alone or in addition to certain other over-the-counter and prescription acne regimens. Some types of skin may be at risk for complications so IPL for acne under physician supervision is highly recommended.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • you should not get an IPL treatment if you've had a recent suntan or sunburn.

  • since IPL targets pigment, darker skin tones are at higher risk so careful evaluation and decision making is needed

  • use of retinol or retinoid creams should be discontinued 2-4 weeks ahead of time

  • pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid treatment

HOW OFTEN AND HOW LONG ARE TREATMENTS

It takes 2-4 sessions at a weekly interval and then monthly within a three-month period for clearing. After 3 months of treatment, it is usually not needed outside of a rare touch up. It depends on the specific individual, so schedule a free consultation to see what your customized treatment plan looks like.

IS IT SAFE

Intense Pulsed Light therapy is FDA approved, requires no downtime and is gentle on the skin.

IS IT PAINFUL

Some describe it as a mild discomfort, but that can be helped with a topical numbing cream that is applied beforehand. Also, cool rollers or packs on the skin during and after treatment makes the 15 minute treatment more comfortable.

WHAT ABOUT SCARS

IPL can be used in combination with fractionated laser treatments that correct the deeper acne scarring caused by longstanding acne. Resurfacing the skin in this way can give you back the appearance you have longed for.
